  • "It is fortunate that digital technology, because it breaks free from the walls of the school, is able to ensure pedagogical continuity during this period of confinement", declares Jean-Yves Hepp
Since the school closed on Monday March 16 , to fight against the coronavirus epidemic, digital technology has been the preferred alternative for teachers to ensure "educational continuity". Jean-Yves Hepp is the founder of Sqool, a tablet with educational content intended for teachers and their students, from kindergarten to high school. Used by 2,000 public establishments, it is today the leading EdTech (educational technology) tool in France . The entrepreneur, son of a teacher, explains in Point the benefits of digital learning, but also what precautions to observe.
Jean-Yves Hepp:Digital technology, because it breaks free from school walls, is able to ensure educational continuity during this period of confinement. On Sqool, where the teacher transmits lectures and presentations that he would have made in class, gives homework and indicates the time for “collecting copies”, this continuity operates under almost normal conditions. Of course, with digital platforms, the student is no longer in direct contact with his teacher, and that's a loss. And, if we observe a fundamental movement in its favor, the crisis we are going through today could be an accelerator. Remember that, for now, from their homes, all French children are not fully equipped. It is often - and all the more so during a period of confinement - the fight to access the family computer, that we share, on average, four!
How do you respond to parents who fear that their children, between school and leisure, will spend their time behind a screen?
That the educational screen is only a tool, like a compass or a calculator. A tool on which it is not necessary to have our eyes fixed, as we do not have them, either, on a manual. As for leisure, in normal times, young French people spend an average of four hours a day in front of their smartphone and three hours in front of the television.
