Overview
I will preface this by saying I do not think it's a terrible thing for them to bring awareness to the issue. It's important that it can not just be dismissed by looking away from it. With that said, I really do possess a certain amount of distrust towards multi-billion dollar multinational corporations paying lip service to significant social issues. They're in the best possible place to do more than simply put out a press release or public statement. Obviously, as a capitalist business they're under no duty to do so, and it rings hollow when they try to stand in solidarity with Madden 21 coins the ordinary people. Currently there are businesses out there that are doing things and this is the opportunity to highlight those attempts; to show that they're more than simply words.
That said police brutality isn't just something that a company like EA throwing money at the issue does much towards fixing. At best they place money towards the attorneys and groups that fight to see justice after the fact or lobby to have laws changed that in the present government will not. It's systemic difficulties within police of not reporting their own and holding them liable rather staying silent and with the authorities unions that allow it all to occur or in ways even promote it by the repercussions being a slap on the wrist followed by being hired at a different precinct showing them there's no consequences. Before even getting to legislation and rulings such as qualified immunity that shield abusive cops and permit them to misuse their power freely. The majority of which EA and most capitalist businesses aren't able to perform so much about making it unfair to say they're in the best possible position to do much more.
The ones in the best possible place to do more are the supposed good cops by no more remaining quiet and allowing bad cops to get away with their misuse of power or voting to get superior leadership for their unions that will not enable the behavior. But of course it is just words. Since following decades of corporations doing things for the wrong reason, people are extremely cynical. Even if all businesses stopped doing things wrong, it is going to take a long, long time for that picture of corporate America to reduce its tarnish. Part of what people can do is pick politicians that promise they'll hold these corporations accountable. It probably wont happen alone. This could be much easier if someone like that could run for office successfully.
Because regardless of this sentiment, this is still 100% a business and marketing maneuver. If they really wanted to do something positive, they could do it without advertising their merchandise while doing this. Because it is not genuine. This is not any different than the coronavirus commercials. They might have said nothing at all. Rather, they brought positive attention to the protests. That's good. Solidarity or they realize a nice chunk of their audience is preoccupied with something more significant than a damn videogame? Man. These remarks really emphasize the nihilistic nature of reddit users. Yes, this really is a provider. Yes, it has something to do with advertising. However, Jesus, can't we be glad that companies are saying something? Do you not know how much of an effect this could make? If the company ignored the circumstance, it might give every checked out mind the idea that what is happening is ordinary and routine.
EA does not care for people that aren't investors. Removing Kaepernick's name out of songs in Madden two years in a row shows it. Companies do not need one to defend them, let their attorneys do that work. But we shouldn't praise a business for reaching the absolute bare minimum. It feels just like throwing a party for if your friend says"Hey guys I'm not racist" after he said the N word a year ago. You aren't cool and ethical for thanking corporations for not spitting on you. We should praise firms who show patterns of positivity. Feel free to disagree, but don't act like this specific case is this incredibly complex morally-grey circumstance. I mean I believed there were fairly strict regulations whose titles and likeliness may be used in Madden. Just like Belicheck and Payton aren't in Madden because they are not part of the NFLCA and that is who EA has a contract with. They might have to pay Kap if his name is utilized and are probably avoiding that. That and Kap is not exactly welcome in the cheap mut coins madden 21 NFL planet (not talking about lovers ) anymore.
