If you’re attending a graduation ceremony or celebrating a recent grad, you might be pondering the perfect gift. For many, a cash gift seems like the best option—but it often feels impersonal. How do you present cash in a thoughtful and unique way? A DIY graduation card may be just the answer!

    A handmade card can add a personal touch to the ever-practical cash gift, making it more meaningful. Whether you have access to a cutting machine or not, you can create a beautiful and thoughtful graduation card. Here’s a guide on how to make your own DIY graduation card, complete with materials needed, a step-by-step tutorial, and free printables for those without cutting machines.

    Materials Needed for Handmade Graduation Cards

    There are several ways to approach making your DIY graduation card. One of the easiest and most versatile methods involves using cardstock, which can be paired with other materials like iron-on vinyl for added flair. Below is a list of the materials you’ll need for this project:

    • Cricut Cutting Machine with Scoring Wheel – This helps in precise cutting and scoring of the cardstock. (Check for price differences between Cricut.com and Amazon.)
    • Cricut Gel Pen – Perfect for writing messages or adding extra decorative touches.
    • Glue Stick – Used for assembling the pieces of your card.
    • Iron-On Vinyl (Optional) – I used Cricut glitter mesh for an extra touch of sparkle.
    • EasyPress 2 and Mat (Optional) – To apply the iron-on vinyl to the cardstock.
    • Stamp Pad and Dauber (Optional) – For adding a subtle decorative effect to the edges of the cardstock.

    If you don’t have a cutting machine, don’t worry! You can still create this card using free printables that only require printing, cutting, and gluing.

    Step-by-Step DIY Graduation Card Tutorial

    Whether you’re making your card by hand or using a cutting machine, this tutorial will guide you through the process. If you have access to Cricut Design Space, you can find the design file here. You can even customize it with the graduate’s name or graduation year.

    Step 1: Prepare and Cut the Materials

    Start by opening the file in Cricut Design Space. If you’d like to personalize it, click “Customize” to make changes. Once you're happy with the design, proceed with cutting the materials.

    1. Set the Material to Cardstock: When you begin the project, ensure that your material is set to “cardstock” on the Cricut machine.
    2. Insert the Scoring Wheel and Pen: The Cricut machine will prompt you to insert the scoring wheel and gel pen. This step helps create clean folds and any decorative or text elements on your card.
    3. Swap the Scoring Wheel for the Cutting Blade: Once the scoring is complete, the machine will pause and prompt you to insert the cutting blade. Press the white flashing light to continue cutting.
    4. Cut Out All Other Materials: Continue to place each piece of cardstock onto your Cricut mat, following the prompts on the screen.

    Step 2: Apply Iron-On Vinyl (Optional)

    If you’re using iron-on vinyl to add an extra layer of detail to your card, follow these steps:

    1. Mirror Your Design: On the Cricut preview screen, click the mirror setting to ensure your iron-on vinyl cuts in the right direction.
    2. Place the Vinyl on the Mat: Place the plastic backing or shiny side of the iron-on vinyl face down on the cutting mat.
    3. Weed the Vinyl: After the machine finishes cutting, remove the excess vinyl, leaving only the design.
    4. Heat Press the Vinyl: Center the vinyl design on your cardstock. Using the EasyPress 2, press down for 30 seconds with light pressure. Flip the cardstock over and press the back for 15 seconds to secure the vinyl.

    Step 3: Assemble the Card

    Now that all your pieces are cut and your vinyl is applied, it’s time to assemble the card.

    1. Glue the Pieces Together: Use a glue stick to attach the cut pieces of cardstock together. Follow the design’s prompts or your customized layout.
    2. Add Personal Messages: If using a Cricut gel pen, you can program it to write messages directly onto the card. If not, you can handwrite a personalized note for the graduate.
    3. Insert Money or a Gift Card: You can easily make a pocket on the inside of the card to insert cash or a gift card, making the gift both practical and heartfelt.
