Overview

  • An educational expert talks about how the psychology of a child changes after 10 years, how parents can help him go through a difficult and interesting period of growing up, and also support the teenager's motivation to study.

My many years of experience in communicating with children suggests that after graduating from elementary school, already from the 5th grade, children begin to actively change. At the age of 10, hormonal changes in the body are triggered: children begin to grow rapidly, the control parts of the brain change. There are also many changes in the psychological aspect. They are becoming more open to the world because the number of adults who communicate with them, in particular at school, is increasing significantly.
Until that time, an indisputable authority, the main "significant adult" for them was an elementary school teacher or parent, or another adult. He knew "everything", the children trusted him. At the age of 10, children begin to question the words of adults, to check them, to doubt the authority of the “first” teacher. Yes, they believe adults, but they also test them, because they already know that there are alternative opinions: from their friends, from their parents, from other adults.

At this age, the world for a child is filled with new shades of colors. He begins to actively learn about it: absorb both positive and negative. And our task, as adults, in this important period is to be close to him, to become a kind of "compass" for the child. To say what is good and what is not. At the same time, it is delicate to explain that such an “assessment” of the situation is only our point of view. We, as adults, think so. And you decide for yourself what to do. If a child trusts you, he begins to form his own landmarks in this world.
