Overview
- It is worth noting that the Obama campaign is currently running for only the Xbox 360 version of the game, as it was handled by Microsoft's game-specific ad agency Massive Incorporated Mut 23 Coins. In-game advertisements specifically for the PlayStation 5 version of Burnout Paradise are handled through IGA Worldwide. In the case of being absent Republican president John McCain, the EA representative stated that Massive has reached out to for a meeting with the Arizona senator's presidential campaign and it "passed" on an Burnout advertisement purchase.
The EA representative claimed that the publisher approaches its in-game advertisements as the radio or TV station, noting that "Political advertising is not reflective of the policies or opinions that are the responsibility of EA as well as its designers." A representative from IGA Worldwide said the firm "could not provide any information regarding the advertisements that are political."
While EA does not officially endorse Obama the company's top executive has contributed to the Democratic campaign. In a different GamePolitics article, the website revealed a number of industry leaders' political campaign contributions, including EA Chief Executive John Riccitiello throwing $4,600 into the Obama budget. Numerous other gaming celebrities have also made donations of hundreds of dollars this election season and include Spore Designer Will Wright and Activision CEO Bobby Kotick among those sending thousands of dollars to McCain while Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick and ESRB president Patricia Vance contributed substantial sums to Obama. In the primaries Valve Software head Gabe Newell gave $2300 in support of Democrat Chris Dodd's unlucky candidacy.
Update A representative from Massive said to MMOexp that the Obama campaign approached Massive with the idea of running a campaign. They added the fact that Massive "does not support either candidate." The in-game ad company has a few restrictions on Buy Madden 23 Coins advertisements, however, it will not allow alcohol or tobacco ads as well as other restrictions that vary in accordance with the rating of the game being played.
