However, it suffers from the performance decay after long-term operation in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Here we add a natural hierarchical porous nitrogen-rich carbon material, carbonized Artemia cyst shells (LC), to alleviate the power decay. When the air-cathode is made of a mixture of AC and LC with a mass ratio of 1:2 (named 1AC2LC), the current densities are 28% (the beginning) and 65% (after 1 year's operation) higher than AC cathodes, and the long-term power densities increase from 0.871 ± 0.002 (AC) to 1.296 ± 0.005 W m−2 (1AC2LC) after one year's operation. The Coulombic efficiency increases by 20% than the control. Succinic-acid production was evaluated in the HSD system by varying the substrate loading and dilution rate. The results showed that high productivities of succinic acid were obtained when 60 g/L glucose was fed over a dilution rates ranging from 0.03 to 0.4/h. AC powders were characterized in terms of surface chemistry and porosity, and their kinetic activities were compared to carbon black and platinum catalysts in rotating disk electrode (RDE) tests. Cathodes using the coal-derived AC had the highest power densities in MFCs (1620 ± 10 mW m(-2)). Peat-based AC performed similarly in MFC tests (1610 ± 100 mW m(-2)) and had the best catalyst performance, with an onset potential of E(onset) = 0.17 V, and n = 3.6 electrons used for oxygen reduction. Sludge properties were analyzed through various analytical measurements. The results showed that the improved sludge aggregation ability and the evolution of microbial communities affected sludge morphology in PAC-DMBR, as evidenced by the formation of large, regularly shaped and strengthened sludge flocs. The modifications of sludge characteristics promoted the formation process and filtration flux of the dynamic membrane (DM) layer.
