MLB is finally doing something about its foreign substance problem by conducting on-field checks for sticky stuff, and pitchers aren't happy about it. Nationals ace Max Scherzer and A's reliever Sergio Romo both went viral with their reactions to being checked by umpires, stopping just short of stripping down in front of everybody. Scherzer even got into a heated shouting match with Phillies manager Joe Girardi, which led to Girardi's ejection.
As entertaining as these temper tantrums may be, pitchers need to show some maturity. Baseball dragged its feet in addressing the issue, and the TSA-style checks do further slow down a game that's constantly criticized for its pace of play. But until the league and its players find a better solution, pitchers need to pull up their pants and act like big boys.
