Teaching Feelings to Your Children

  • When teaching feelings, you need to make sure that your children understand that emotions are different from each other. If you can, use a visual cue to make them understand the difference between different types of feelings. Then, make them do some activities related to different emotions. One fun activity is to draw feeling faces. Your students can draw pictures of themselves feeling different emotions each day.

Teaching your child about emotions should begin when they are young. It is important that they know what these different emotions are so that they can express them appropriately. This will prevent meltdowns and help them build relationships. To begin with, teach them how to name their feelings. By doing so, they will understand why they feel that way and will be more aware of how to react to situations.

Another great activity is to use a feelings chart to teach your children about their emotions. You can use pictures of people or even emojis to illustrate different emotions. You can use as many pictures as you need to, but don't overwhelm a young child with too many choices. As your child gets older, you can start introducing nuances and more options for your feelings chart.

You can also use songs to teach your children about different feelings. Children tend to feel uncomfortable when discussing their feelings. A catchy song can help them to talk about their feelings. Another great way to get them talking about their feelings is by playing a puppet show.
