Mercedes chose to split their strategies at the F1 Japanese Grand Prix, going with a two-stopper for Lewis Hamilton and the one-stopper for George Russell.
But with Toto Wolff away for the weekend it got feisty on the opening lap between the pair and both refused to cede track position. This battle continued throughout the race, reaching boiling point later on at spoon corner where Lewis forced Russell onto the kerbs in defence.
In the final few laps the team were caught between options on a potential position swap as Lewis’ strategy caused him to arrive to George’s gearbox with fresher tyres and the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz hot on his tail.
Russell disagreed with the call and was overtaken by Sainz and the paddock was left to debate whether Mercedes got their call wrong.
All this means that there is now only a 20 points gap between Ferrari and Mercedes for P2 in the championship, and Ferrari out-scored Mercedes in this round.
Do you think Mercedes will be able to hold on P2 and the huge sum of prize money that comes with it?
Thank you for watching.
