The ratio of the two enzymes (cellulase-to-hemicellulase) was initially optimized to break down the lignocellulose into its free monomers, wherein the best ratio was determined as 4:1. Succinic-acid production was evaluated in the HSD system by varying the substrate loading and dilution rate. The results showed that high productivities of succinic acid were obtained when 60 g/L glucose was fed over a dilution rates ranging from 0.03 to 0.4/h. AC powders were characterized in terms of surface chemistry and porosity, and their kinetic activities were compared to carbon black and platinum catalysts in rotating disk electrode (RDE) tests. Cathodes using the coal-derived AC had the highest power densities in MFCs (1620 ± 10 mW m(-2)). The HgO was formed mainly through the oxidation of mercury by lattice oxygen, while the HgS was generated by the reaction between Ce2S3 and mercury. The formation of carboxyl groups by Diels-Alder reaction was proved by FTIR, solid-state 13C NMR, CO and CO2 evolution from TPD and Boehm titration. Titration results showed that the number of carboxyl groups increased from 0.09 mmol g−1 to 3.06 mmol g−1. DFT calculation showed that the concave site of the armchair edge on carbon surface was the most favorable for the Diels-Alder addition.
