"I'm done being shy."
After a resurgence at the end of 2019 put Naomi Osaka back in the top 3, she looked positioned to make a deep run in defending her title at the Australian Open. However, a surprisingly quick loss to Coco Gauff in the 3rd round put an end to her second-ever Grand Slam title defense. Then, 50 unforced errors and a lopsided 0-6, 3-6 loss at Fed Cup had everyone wondering if Naomi Osaka was folding under the pressure of being one of the biggest athletes in the world.
Naomi Osaka became one of the most prominent voices supporting the protests when she led a player strike before the semifinal of the Western & Southern Open. Before the US Open, Naomi said she had 7 masks bearing the names of victims of police violence, and would wear a new mask before every round of the tournament. In capturing the championship -- her 2nd US Open title and 3rd Major overall -- she was able to show the world all 7 masks, and to highlight the off-court activism that has come to define her almost as much as her on-court success.
