When Maria Sharapova retired in early 2020, people wondered if Victoria Azarenka would be next. She announced she would not play the Australian Open or Indian Wells tournaments, for "personal reasons", and when she did play in Monterrey, she wasn't at her best.
When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the tours to shut down, Vika still struggled at Charleston -- where she failed to win a single match in either singles or doubles -- and at the Top Seed Open in Lexington -- where she lost to Venus Williams in the first round.
Then everything changed. Vika stormed her way to the Western & Southern Open final in Cincinnati, ultimately winning in a walkover by Naomi Osaka. To prove it wasn't a fluke, she did the same at the US Open, even overcoming her past ghosts in beating Serena Williams in the Quarterfinal. While she ultimately lost to Naomi Osaka in the US Open final, the world noticed that she was back.
A quieter clay swing through Rome and Roland-Garros led to her third final of the year in Ostrava. With a bit of time to regroup before the 2021 season, one thing is for sure: Victoria Azarenka is back.
