Despite starting the year near the bottom of the timings sheets, McLaren’s rise through the F1 table has been one of the biggest storylines of the year. Usurping the similarly Mercedes-powered Aston Martin to be the sport’s best customer team is a huge (and financially rewarding) achievement. If their technical gains can be further extrapolated into 2024 - could they be Red Bull’s closest challengers? There are plenty of factors at play here; it is no small feat to beat your engine manufacturer to a championship and it’s not something we’ve seen in the hybrid era. To win championships, you first have to win races - and that is something that has eluded the Papaya outfit but with a team principal now in his 2nd year, a new ex-Red Bull Technical Director joining over the winter, and a driver pairing that has shown their class throughout 2023 - there is a case to be made (if rather more out of hope for a competitive championship than on a purely analytical basis).
