Back-to-back losses in the 2nd rounds of Brisbane and Adelaide set the stage for what could have been a disappointing 2020. But then, she announced herself to the world by winning the Australian Open, beating native favorite and world no. 1 Ash Barty in the process.
The rest of her year followed a similar rollercoaster. Back-to-back first-match losses in Dubai and Doha following her maiden Slam, then another title in Lyon. When COVID-19 shut down the season in March, she had a good showing in both World Team Tennis and the Credit One Bank Invitational in Charleston.
But then a first-match loss at the Western & Southern Open brought back the doubters. She made the Round of 16 in New York, the furthest of her career. Then lost 0-6, 0-6 to Victoria Azarenka in Rome. It was the first time in her career she had been double-bageled, and the first time a player had ever had that happen to them the same year they won a Grand Slam. Which set the stage for a Finals run at Roland-Garros to finish off the year.
Sofia Kenin caught the world's attention in 2020. In 2021, she'll have to see which version of herself comes to play.
